Autism and Aspergers Syndrome
Today I went to an Autism and Asperger's Syndrome Seminar. It was VERY interesting! I've had 1 child with Autism and 1 child with Aspergers in the past 4 years. Things make a lot more sense now. I definitely researched the syndromes before I had the kids in class, but to hear the expert's discuss it was an eye opener. One of the speakers has autism, and has written numerous books on living with autism. I found her fascinating. I would recommend learning about these disorders to help better ourselves as educators.

Was the speaker Temple Grandon? I think that is her last name anyway! If it was, she really puts a new light on things for educators!
I have a student with Aspergers. He has a very easy temperament - a very loving kid. However, he has some characteristics that make him an easy target for bullies.
I have had two students with Aspergers in the four years that I have taught. Both of them were as far apart in the syndrome as they could be.
I deal with autistic children quite frequently actually. They all are different in their own way. Jenny McCarthy wrote a good book on Autism.
That sounds informative! As teachers we need to be inform on those types of disabilities in order to serve our students.
I wish our district would hold something like that for us! How interesting!!
I have met a child at church that has been diagnosed with Aspergers. He is very aggressive. Is that one of the characteristics? I have had a child with mild autism but he was very loving and easy going.
What was the best part?
I have had several students with these syndromes and can honestly say that each one has been totally different. After reading Chapter 15, I am wondering why my students did not have the technology available to help them communicate effectively....?????
It would be nice if the schools could provide us with this kind of in-service.
I have a new neighbor who is autistic. I would have loved to go to this conference because he will be in my classroom in a few days.
